Day 2 of the CU Water Cooler Syposium started with an amazing presentation from Maya Bourdeau from the Filene Research Institute. She discussed market research she did into how consumers respond to credit union advertising. What works and what doesn't. I highly recommend watching this presentation.
For more information about the research, check out the Filene report "Images Matter: Research to Results".

CU Chat Up - International Credit Union Day
In honor of International CU Day, my last radio show was about that celebration and National Cooperative Month with an all CUDEs (Credit Union Development Educators) guest list including Lois Kitsch, Walter Laskos and Chad Helminak.
Listen to the show to hear about international, national and local happenings for ICU Day.
At the end of the show, it was also the radio debut of the first single from the upcoming album by The Disclosures - a thrift rock duo of Chad Helminak and Christopher Morris.

Suze Orman and NCUA: The National Coverage CUs have been Waiting for?
Neither national trade association seems willing to spend money on a national branding campaign for credit unions, will the NCUA's insurance campaign with Suze Orman fill that gap?
Suze Orman has been touting the benefits of credit unions for almost a year, especially through the promotion of Credit Card Connection and credit union credit cards. Today, the NCUA launched an awareness program about credit union insurance fund and how it is "virtually" the same as FDIC coverage. The ads also promote the insurance calculator on the NCUA website.
According to the NCUA, the Suze Orman awareness campaign will include TV Public Service Announcements, as well as, radio ads and billboards inside malls. I have embedded the long video ad and an interview with Suze Orman below.
While I think this is a great campaign to spread the word about NCUA insurance, I don't think this campaign is necessarily very good for credit union advocacy or differentiation from banks. The campaign titled "Twins" doesn't draw a distinction between banks and credit unions, rather, it points out the similarities in insurance coverage.
I find it rather interesting that the videos are hosted on YouTube, but in the comments it specifically says that credit unions are not supposed to embed them on their own websites:
It will be interesting to see how many credit unions embed the video without noticing the restriction. Or, will credit unions just link to the video on YouTube instead. This would be a great video to promote on Facebook and through Twitter as well.
Overall, I am glad to see that the NCUA got a spokesperson as high profile and respected as Suze Orman and someone who has been on all major networks and cable channels over the last year promoting the benefits of credit unions. I am looking forward to seeing her in future credit union PSAs.

"This video is not intended for commercial use by individual credit unions including embedding on a credit union website."My only thought is that it is not allowed, because having the video on a credit union website could be construed as an endorsement of that credit union by Suze Orman. But, I find it unfortunate. By preventing credit unions from using the videos, the NCUA is missing out on an incredible opportunity to spread the word about the insurance coverage to the very people who use it. And, those who would benefit from using the insurance calculators.

1-2-1 Financial Credit Union presented by I Wear Your Shirt
Last week, 1-2-1 Financial Credit Union in Florida was the shirt of the day on I Wear Your Shirt. Here is the video of the day.
The credit union launched their new name 1-2-1 Financial Credit Union this same day. I Wear Your Shirt created awareness of credit unions not just in Florida, but across the nation. The credit union also was running a contest on their facebook page the same day giving away a signed David Garrard jersey and some gift cards. Check out the response that they got at http://www.facebook.com/121financial.
Is this a marketing partnership that your credit union could use?
