CU Chat Up - A Full Week of Credit Union Interviews

This week was full of new radio shows including two on Monday and another on Wednesday. I have included direct links to each show or you can listen via the embedded player on the right for about a week.

Monday started off with the weekly show, CU Water Cooler Liquid Lunch with fellow editor, Jimmy Marks. We briefly discussed International Credit Union Day and then moved on to juicier topics including: Wag, the bank for dog fanatics, and Ron Shevlin's blog post, Bank Transfer Day Needs A New Name. Jeff Stephens, the creative mind behind Wag, wrote a blog post in response to the show.

You can listen to the show here:

Later on Monday, CU Chat Up looked outside the credit union industry to discuss the current hot topic of consumers moving their money from big banks to credit unions. Natalie McNeal, the Frugalista and author of The Frugalista Files, stopped by to discuss her insights into why consumers are moving their accounts, what they are looking for in a credit union, and helpful hints for credit unions during this time. She was joined by Ondine Irving, Credit Credit Card Connection and Bryan Clagett, Geezeo, who discussed what they are seeing from consumers as well.

You can listen to the show here:

On Wednesday, two of the Next Top Credit Union Executive finalists stopped by to talk about their amazing projects:
They share what they have learned through their projects and some insights into changing the culture at a credit union.

You can listen to the show here:

This was a fill week of credit union insights. Please listen to one or all the shows and share your thoughts in the comments! When I went to embed the shows, the ad playing before the shows ... Chase Bank. I don't have control over those ads, but find it humorous.

Making the Most of Positive Credit Union Buzz

Between the Occupy protests and Bank of America's new $5 a month debit card fee, there is much negative sentiment towards the big banks these days. Anger has swelled into a grassroots call for people pull their money out of big banks and move to credit unions and smaller community banks.

While these feelings first came to be with the bank bailout and the Huffington Post's Move Your Money project, it never really stuck. This time the situation seems to be taking hold with a Bank Transfer Day scheduled for November 5th.

On this week's show, I invited Kyle Markland (CEO, Affinity Plus CU), Joe Mecca (Marketing and Advertising Manager, Coastal Federal CU) and Pat Keefe (VP Communications & Media Outreach, CUNA) to come on and discuss the positive buzz that credit unions have received recently.

Kyle and Joe discussed the mood of these new members, who is actually switching their account, what accounts these new members are opening and the marketing they are doing to take advantage of this current environment. Pat talked about asmarterchoice.org -- a comprehensive credit union finder website and what CUNA has been doing to promote credit unions during this time.
